The Racing Post's Kitty Trice joined Grade 1-winning jockey Lizzie Kelly, Made In Chelsea star Binky Felstead and fitness guru Chessie King for Great British Racing's Jockey Fit workout in London on Tuesday

The Randox Health Grand National, Britain's longest and most valuable jumps race, will push the stamina of each runner to the limit – and GBR's Jockey Fit campaign demonstrated just how tough those in the saddle have to be as well.

Leading the way was Lizzie Kelly, who will partner Tea For Two in Saturday's £1 million Aintree contest over 4m2½f, and who assisted the participants on the Equicizer, with riders able to watch themselves going over the National fences via virtual reality.

Given Kelly's prowess on the Equicizer it was a daunting prospect for everyone else to emulate her, but, with plenty of guidance and encouragement, the gang put in a terrific effort and actually ended up being keen for a second go!

Kelly said: "It’s really important to have an accurate representation of jockeys’ hard work in the gym, and whilst riding on course, and this programme is a great way to convey this message. I challenge anyone to take on this workout to find out exactly how!"

After winning the Betway Bowl on Tea For Two in 2017, Kelly is looking forward to her first ride in the Grand National. She said: "We went down to [David] Pipe's and schooled over the National-type fences twice, which was perfect as the first time he was a little bit hesitant and the second time he was very happy. I was really pleased."

Jockey Fit, which was trialled at Epsom last August, targets four key physical requirements for a jockey: cardio, core, balance and quads, and those were undoubtedly tested to the limit during the 45-minute session.

The five exercise stages, which included box jumps, TRX pistol squats, bear crawls, kettlebell swings and an Equicizer, were held as circuit training. The encouragement of Chessie King, who runs her own health and fitness blog, galvanised the team throughout.

The strenuous workout even tested King, who admitted: "I've done a lot of HIIT variations but this one is something else! The 45-minute session was more than enough to make my legs and core burn."

A rigorous warm-up went only a little way to preparing for the daunting task ahead and on-site personal trainer Gary Williams put everyone through their paces. And them some.

Even for somebody in training for the Magnolia Cup at Glorious Goodwood, the workout tested every ounce of my resilience and determination.

Having starred for several years in the Bafta-winning television series Made in Chelsea, which features some of West London's poshest young things, it takes a lot to impress Binky Felstead, although fitness and horses are very much part of her life, and she has competed in cross-country events.

She said: "I found the Jockey Fit session very challenging! I had no idea of the intensity of the jockeys’ fitness regime – I’m impressed!"
