Temporary break from relentless rain raises hopes for full Wednesday schedule
The two-week period of unprecedented rainfall which has led to the abandonment of multiple race meetings in recent days mellowed on Monday, with prospects looking potentially rosier for Wednesday's racing and for the remainder of the week.
However, Leicester holds a 7.30am inspection for its seven-race card on Tuesday morning after further rain ensued on Monday, and parts of Redcar's track remain waterlogged by the heavy weekend rain ahead of its meeting on Friday.
Nottingham has beaten the weather for the last two midweek meetings and clerk of the course Jane Hedley is upbeat about making it third time lucky as well after Monday produced intermittent rain well short of the 11mm predicted.
Hedley said: "We have a dry day forecast on Tuesday and into Wednesday and have been in this position the last two Mondays and been able to race relatively easily.
"We will be able to race on fresher ground pushing the line to the widest out on the outside track for the last fixture on it before racing on the inner track in two weeks."
Windsor failed to survive its Monday morning inspection and Haydock on Friday has already succumbed to the wet weather.
However jump racing has no such problems with heavy ground as racecourses return from summer breaks with the rain welcome in producing generally good going.
In excess of 13mm fell at the Redcar on Sunday, and clerk of the course Jonjo Sanderson said: "We were in a similar condition at the beginning of the week for the Two-Year-Old Trophy fixture, but we had a dry week and there was no problem.
"I won't say we're doubtful for Friday but we have got more rain forecast tonight so we'll have to go through a bit more pain before we see any improvement. Obviously, in current conditions, we could not race today."
