Urban Fox set for Nassau tilt as Haggas lines up Sea Of Class for Irish Oaks
William Haggas is set to rely on Pretty Polly Stakes winner Urban Fox, rather than dual Listed winner Sea Of Class, in Goodwood's Qatar Nassau Stakes.
The pair were disputing favouritism at around 5-1 for the August 2 Group 1, but Haggas – who revealed that his Derby disappointment Young Rascal will not be ready for the Gordon Stakes, but is still on course for a possible tilt at the William Hill St Leger – is aiming Sea Of Class instead at Saturday's Darley Irish Oaks.
He said on Monday: "Sea Of Class was left in at the Curragh this morning and we're planning to run Urban Fox at Goodwood.
"Urban Fox is a great big filly who's done very well physically, having possibly lost her way last year. We thought she liked fast ground and she does. I hope it's not going to rain at Goodwood."
Watch Urban Fox win the Pretty Polly Stakes
The Queen's Belmont winner Call To Mind will take on Stradivarius in the Qatar Goodwood Cup, where the Gold Cup winner is odds-on in places to take the third of four legs required for the new Weatherbys Hamilton Million bonus.
Haggas said: "Call To Mind has got a bit to find on the book but he's really doing well physically and he stays well. He's very genuine and I think he should run a good race."
The trainer expects to have a few runners in the handicaps at Glorious Goodwood, but is not sure Muthmir will take on Battaash in the King George Stakes and has more or less ruled out Society Power from his various engagements as he is in the process of being sold.
He said: "We hope to run Maid To Remember in the Lillie Langtry and the Queen's horse Seniority in the Golden Mile. We might have Pretty Baby and One Master in the Oak Tree."
Young Rascal is recovering well from his Epsom experience, which left him "shell shocked".
Haggas said: "He won't be ready for the Gordon and he'll be aimed instead at the Voltigeur and possibly the St Leger. We're cranking him up now for an autumn campaign."
Arkell 'desperate for rain'
The going at Goodwood is good to firm but Ed Arkell, clerk of the course for his first festival meeting after a decade of assisting long-time clerk Seamus Buckley, admits it has been a baptism of fire.
He said: "We're desperate for rain. We've had only 4mm since June 1, compared to 101mm in the corresponding period 12 months ago.
"We have our own bore hole and are putting on as much water as we can, but it has to be pumped up from the Kennels [a mile or more south of the racecourse] to Trundle Hill, and then gravity brings it down to the course again.
"There's some rain forecast at the end if the week and some more at the end of next week, but there's no knowing how much."
