Coolmore well represented as entries for 2020 Derby are revealed

A total of 356 yearling entries – an increase on the 339 from the previous year – have been received for the 2020 Investec Derby at Epsom.

The Coolmore partners have 75 entries between them, including a Galileo colt out of Shastye. The colt realised 3.4 million guineas at Tattersalls and is a brother to Japan, a Group 2-winning two-year-old this year and among the leading contenders for the 2019 Derby. Galileo is the top sire represented in the 2020 Derby entries, with 56 yearlings.

The Queen has won every Classic except the Derby, coming closest to success in 1953 runner-up Aureole and 2011 third Carlton House. There are five royal entries for 2020.

New Racing To School chairman

Michael Andrews is to lead the charity Racing To School from next year, with the new chairman replacing David Adam, who will remain on the board as a valued trustee.

Director of buying at Waitrose and Partners, Andrews has been involved in racing as a steward at Ascot, Goodwood and Plumpton, a committee member of the Royal Ascot Racing Club and owns shares in both Flat and jumps horses. He also recently served as chairman of The Prince’s Countryside Fund Raceday, raising £1.4m over four years.

With the support of schools, colleges and pony clubs, Racing to School reached a record 14,000 young people in 2018, and Andrews said: “It is an honour to take over the reins from David Adam.

"My fellow trustees and I will remain true to the values of the charity and look forward to engaging and supporting the positive impact that our programme and racing offers young people across the country.”

Tanya Stevenson new CEO of Horseracing Sponsors Association

Broadcaster Tanya Stevenson is to become the new chief executive of the Horseracing Sponsors Association, taking over from Nigel Payne.

HSA president Roger Easterby said: "Nigel has been chief executive since 1993, when the late George Ward was president. Nigel will be a hard act to follow but we are very fortunate to have secured the services of Tanya."

Caution for Ger O'Neill

Apprentice Ger O'Neill has received a caution from the BHA for failing a breath test at Pontefract on July 29.

O'Neill, who has 34 career wins with 18 this year, has not ridden in the last ten weeks and was suspended from riding on the day at Pontefract after providing two breath tests before racing.

Both were just over the BHA threshold of 17 microgrammes/100ml with the first reading 25mgs and the second 24mgs taken six minutes later.

Those two readings were well below the legal limit for driving a car, which is 35mg/100ml.

O'Neill had enjoyed plenty of success this year with Declan Carroll, notably registering two wins on Justanotherbottle, on whom he was second to Gifted Master in the Stewards' Cup at Goodwood.

New BHA stewarding forum

The BHA has formed a new consultation forum to continue the development of stewarding in Britain.

The group includes Paul Barton, who retired as head of stewarding at the end of last year, and a cross-section of the BHA’s stewarding team, split equally between BHA employees and volunteer stewards, as well as members of the BHA’s integrity and handicapping departments.

Brant Dunshea, the BHA chief regulatory officer, is chairing the forum with Racing UK presenter Lydia Hislop in an independent facilitator role.

The forum will also ask other interested parties for their input as part of the BHA's ongoing work.

The forum will give feedback to the BHA executive and board on the continuing implementation and development of the stewarding review, which was unveiled in August with the aim of producing a one-team approach to give some consistency to rulings.

It was also intended to improve standards of officiating, increase consistency, transparency and accountability and to bring British racing into alignment with other sporting bodies and racing jurisdictions.

At the same time the review also respected the history, tradition and significant expertise of the current stewarding model.
