Our betting editor Keith Melrose thinks he has seen a Cheltenham Festival winner

Kildisart
Fifth, Kempton, Saturday

Ever since Kildisart shaped well up the unfavoured inside at Ascot just before Christmas, I have had my eye on him for the Ultima.

After watching Saturday's Betway Handicap Chase, it seems all the more likely that a big spring handicap is his aim. He was never in the best position at Kempton and, typically, threw in a couple of hairy jumps on the way round but still stayed on into a never-nearer fifth.

His jumping will be the big question but chronically bad jumpers need not apply around Aintree, where he won a Grade 3 in April (beating Saturday's winner Mister Malarky, incidentally).

He is back to roughly the same mark 11 months on and it looks like a similar sort of race is his major aim once more. [Keith Melrose]

Pulled up, Exeter, Friday

Few handled the extremely testing conditions in the Devon National and nothing from the rear got involved in the finish.

The closest was arguably Cobolobo, who shaped significantly better than being pulled up suggests. He made headway down the back straight, despite making a few errors, but he paid for that effort and was eventually pulled up.

It is felt that such a marathon test is a little too much for Cobolobo, but he had shown improvement when winning at Haydock in December and has otherwise had excuses this season. He still appeals as he type to win a useful handicap at around three miles before the season is out. [Keith Melrose]

Second, Kempton, Saturday

While the Graded contests were an obvious place to find Cheltenham hopefuls, Kempton's opening handicap provided festival followers with plenty of food for thought.

This was strong form and multiple runners could be worth adding to the tracker, including Palmers Hill, who appeals with the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle in mind. Much of that race revolves around the rider and Jonjo O'Neill, likely to maintain the partnership, is arguably the best conditional around.

Fitness perhaps told here in the dying strides having travelled so menacingly to the last and after a prolonged layoff Palmers Hill should take a significant step forward. [James Norris]

Fourth, Kempton, Saturday

Powering home into fourth behind Downtown Getaway was Polish.

This former Flat stayer lacks Cheltenham entries but he is no less interesting for the future. With just two hurdles runs behind him, inexperience manifested itself in a lack of fluency and a mistake three out proved pivotal just as the race began in earnest.

His handicap mark certainly feels on the lenient side and Aintree, with its long straight sure to suit, could be an attractive option. Connections may even favour a tilt at three miles. [James Norris]
