Oisín Orr models himself on Richard Hughes and that approach is standing him in good stead as the former champion apprentice is on course for his best ever season thanks in no small part to the assistance of Dermot Weld.

The 21-year-old has earned rave reviews from Weld, who has supplied him with two Group 3 victories and a Listed success already this season.

At Naas on Sunday he partners two likely favourites, the Weld-trained Kiss For A Jewel in the fillies' maiden (1.35) and the Richard O'Brien-trained Chessman in the Listed Owenstown Stud Stakes (2.40).

Orr, who has just three winners left with his 3lb claim, won the Group 3 Amethyst Stakes at Leopardstown last Sunday on Weld's Hazapour and hopes to keep impressing the Rosewell House trainer. Although, Hughes has also played a big part in his recent hot streak.

"Richard Hughes was so stylish and had so much finesse. He always seemed to be in the right place at the right time and never seemed to get it wrong. You could always pick him out in a race. His style was so easy to spot. He was the one I idolised growing up," Orr said.

Orr was Ireland's champion apprentice in 2017 with 20 winners but had to settle for 14 last year. He has already reached that total for the current campaign so what target has he set himself?

"I don't really set targets. I just want to keep riding winners and getting a chance on some nice horses. I realise how lucky I am. Mr Weld has been very good to me and I owe him a lot. I ride out for him three mornings a week and I'm with Eddie Lynam the other mornings," Orr said.

"I'm thrilled with how things are going at the minute. I would obviously love to be champion jockey one day but that's a long way down the line, if it ever happens."

He added: "I'm looking forward to losing my claim. It will be easier to do light weights then. They say the last few winners of your claim are the hardest to ride so I just hope that isn't the case with me."

Orr is the younger brother of jump jockey Conor, so is there any rivalry between the pair?

"No, no. Definitely not. He's a jumps man, I'm a Flat man. I wouldn't watch a jumps race unless it was on the television by accident!" he joked.
