Donnacha O'Brien's weighing-out procedure ban reduced on appeal

Irish Flat jockeys' championship leader Donnacha O'Brien has had his seven-day suspension for attempting to weigh out without the harness attachment on his back protector reduced to five days.

An appeal against the original penalty, which was handed down by the stewards at Galway when O'Brien prepared to ride Queen Iseult, was held before racing at Leopardstown on Thursday.

IHRB chief executive Denis Egan said: "The ban was reduced from seven to five days, it having been felt that Donnacha made a genuine mistake."

New Racing Welfare competition offers opportunity to name Rip Van Winkle filly

Joining forces with racehorse owner Craig Buckingham, Racing Welfare are offering the opportunity to name a half-sister to 2008 Champion Hurdle winner Sublimity, with the three-year-old bay filly, who is by Rip Van Winkle, going into training with Dan Skelton.

Entry costs £10 and all proceeds will go to the charity. The winner will receive owners and trainers' passes for every raceday she runs at during her first season, in addition to seeing the horse race under their chosen name.

The package also includes a chance to see the horse in training as part of a Dan Skelton stable tour on November 17, with badges for BetVictor Gold Cup day at Cheltenham following on from this.

Rip Van Winkle filly the subject of Racing Welfare's 'Name a racehorse' competition

Buckingham said: "I wanted to think of an innovative and fun way to get people involved in raising awareness and much needed funds. It’s great to see it being promoted and I hope the racing public get behind it as every penny will go to this great cause."

Entries can be made via Racing Welfare’s website, where there is also a link to check the desired name on the BHA’s website prior to entering.

Ace AP McCoy and Richard Hughes star on Jim Old Golf Day

In the annual Jim Old charity golf day, former champion jockeys Richard Hughes and AP McCoy topped the tournament in a team which also featured Peter Hobbs and Danny Waters.

Over £20,000 was raised for the Injured Jockeys Fund in the competition held at The Common in Marlborough, Wiltshire.

The tournament featured 44 teams made from all people within different areas of racing, competing to try and win the 28th running of the event.

Free WiFi at Leopardstown beginning on Thursday

Free WiFi will be available for racegoers at Leopardstown on Thursday evening as part of a countrywide scheme that has been launched by Horse Racing Ireland in collaboration with the Association of Irish Racecourses. There will be an overall investment of €2.4 million, including a €1.2 million grant from HRI.

Niamh McManus, HRI's WiFi Project Manager, said: "The rollout of the WiFi project will be ongoing for the next 12 months and together with our suppliers eir and Capstone we are thrilled with the success of the initial launch at Ballinrobe and now at Leopardstown."

Thirsk set to host inaugural stable staff race

Twelve stable staff workers have been handed the opportunity to ride in the first-ever running of the Creditas for Business Stable Staff Stakes race in aid of Racing Welfare.

Trainers have nominated riders who work for them and they will all be riding a horse they work with in the one-mile charity contest at Thirsk on August 31.

Malton tickets now available

Tickets for the Malton Festival of Racing, an event which sees 12 yards in the area open their doors to the public, have gone on sale.

The event takes place on September 16 and gives the opportunity to look behind-the-scenes at some of Yorkshire's best known training facilities.

Tickets cost £10 for adults while children under the age of 16 go free. They can be purchased online in advance or on the day from the Racing Welfare Stand on Highfield Gallops or from yards where parking is permitted.
