Tonight’s meeting at Kempton has been cancelled after a major water pipe burst in the Hampton Court area which left the track without any water supply, while Haydock's evening meeting on Thursday is also in doubt with an inspection scheduled for 7am.

Clerk of the course Barney Clifford said: “There is no water on site, and no assessment of a resumption. We’ve had to call off the meeting on account of public and horse welfare. It’s the correct procedure.”

He added: "We don't know when the supply is going to come back. We couldn't have horses arriving here at 3pm with no water to give them."

The water pipe burst this morning left thousands of people in the area with no running water or only a limited supply and forcing some local schools to close.

Thames Water tweeted: "We're sorry to anyone whose water supply has been affected by a burst on a large pipe at our water works in Hampton.

"A team of engineers are there investigating and we have more experts planning how to get water back on for our customers as soon as we possibly can."

Seven races were due to take place at Kempton.

Heavy overnight rain could lead to problems for Thursday's racing, with inspections scheduled at 8am for the meetings at Nottingham and Uttoxeter.
