Frankie Dettori: he's very exciting and a lovely ride to have in the Derby

The 2022 Flat season is in full swing after the first two Classics, the 2,000 Guineas and 1,000 Guineas.

Attention now turns towards Epsom with the Cazoo Derby and Oaks next month, as well as the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly, and market movers come thick and fast as the key Classic trials continue to be run. Our Classic Clues series has you covered.

Here's a recap of the action on Monday and how it has impacted the Classic betting, while we mark your card with key names to note throughout the week.

Monday round-up: Dettori secures Derby ride; Inspiral aimed at Royal Ascot

Monday's action failed to change much of the Classic picture, but action away from the track has certainly made an impact.

It has been confirmed that two-time Derby-winning jockey Frankie Dettori will ride leading contender Piz Badile at Epsom on June 4.

The Donnacha O'Brien-trained three-year-old threw his name into the Derby equation following success in the Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown last time out.

With the experience of Dettori onboard, Piz Badile, who is a general 9-1 shot for the Classic, has a real chance of scoring next month.

In other news, Inspiral, who missed the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket where she was ante-post favourite, will be absent from the Irish equivalent this weekend and is set to head straight to the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot next month.

The Frankel filly was ruled out of the Cazoo Oaks earlier this month and connections explored the possibility of her making a first start since October in either the 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh or the Heron Stakes at Sandown.

However, the John & Thady Gosden-trained three-year-old will head to the royal meeting without a run and is currently favourite at 2-1 with most firms to land the Group 1 race.

What they say

Frankie Dettori, jockey of Piz Badile

"I got the call and he's a very exciting horse. He comes into the Derby with a good profile and he's a lovely ride to have. I've known the Niarchos family for a long time and I was pleased to get the call. I'm looking forward to sitting on him, maybe sometime next week and then it's on to Epsom."

Chris Richardson, managing director of Inspiral's owner-breeders Cheveley Park Stud

"It’s a shame to miss the Classics with her but we have to listen to what she’s telling us and there’s plenty of time ahead. The Coronation has been good to us over the years and it’s one of Mrs Thompson’s favourite races, so it’s a nice target."

All eyes on. . . Derby acceptance stage

The Derby picture will become clearer as the acceptance stage takes place on Tuesday afternoon.

Once the midday deadline has passed, we should have more of an idea as to who will take their chance in the Epsom Classic.

Desert Crown is leading the market for the Epsom Classic and is a general 2-1 shot for Sir Michael Stoute following his win in the Dante at York last week.
