First and last: Rodney Farrant returns a winner and promptly calls it quits

Twenty-one years on from winning the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham on Martha's Son, Rodney Farrant returned 'home' to Chepstow to win the jump legends charity race on Midnight Chill.

Saturday's 12-runner race, in aid of the Bob Champion Cancer Trust and supported by the Reuben Foundation, was over a circuit of the track and hotly contested, with the likes of Timmy Murphy, Andrew Thornton, Seamus Durack and Sean Curran lining up alongside older legends such as Kevin Mooney, Charlie Mann and Willie McFarland.

Farrant, who turns 46 this month, has recently linked up with the charity race-winning trainer Jamie Snowden and showed all his old style in forcing Midnight Chill home ahead of Dominic Elsworth, who was riding Box Office – the final horse Tony McCoy rode in a race – for Jonjo O'Neill.

The winning rider said: "That was great. It got the adrenaline going again and it's the perfect ending, riding my first winner here all those years ago and my last with this.

"I have been riding out for Jamie and he gave me the perfect instructions, telling me to settle him and then make the best way home in the straight."

Farrant, son of former Chepstow clerk of the course Rodger, rode his career-starting winner at the track in 1989 on The Quohee, before a successful career with trainer Jenny Pitman, who provided him with some big-race winners, notably Princeful in the Stayers' Hurdle and Willsford in the Scottish Grand National.
