'Fast' Gustav Klimt will be suited by Sussex Stakes test – Aidan O'Brien

Aidan O'Brien believes Gustav Klimt will be seen to better advantage in the £1 million Qatar Sussex Stakes, in which he will cross swords once again with Without Parole, who beat him by half a length in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Speaking by telephone on Monday at the media launch for the Qatar Goodwood festival, O'Brien said: "The Sussex is the plan for Gustav Klimt, although he obviously has to go through all the tests.

"He's had a busy season but we think Goodwood might suit him. He's a fast horse and we think a mile is his maximum. There's every chance he wants an easy mile rather than a tough one – Ascot is a tough mile, and the Curragh is a tough mile too.

"He shows a lot of pace at home and would be very comfortable coming back to seven furlongs, so we think Goodwood's mile on fast ground is going to suit him. Things haven't really worked for him yet, and he'd appreciate a bit of cover so that he can quicken."

O'Brien could also run the fillies Happily and Clemmie in the Sussex on August 1, and said that Rhododendron is "very possible" for the Qatar Nassau Stakes.

Idaho is likely to be his main Qatar Goodwood Cup hope, with Order Of St George being pointed instead at the King George if Ascot gets some rain, and O'Brien added that while plans for the juveniles are more fluid he could run last week's Roscommon winner Christmas in the Qatar Vintage Stakes.

Thady Gosden, representing his father John, had news of Without Parole and Stradivarius, two hot favourites who will be without regular rider Frankie Dettori, unless his appeal against his Newmarket ban is reduced significantly.

He said: "Without Parole has come on a lot since the St James's Palace. That was only his fourth race and it didn't really go to plan, as they went off very fast and Frankie had to send him for home a long way out.

"Physically he's done very well and he's still carrying quite a bit of condition. You'd be hard pressed to find a rib on him at the moment."

Without Parole is a general 6-4 chance for the Sussex, with Gustav Klimt next best at a best-priced 7-1, ahead of the likes of Beat The Bank and Lightning Spear.

However, Gosden thinks the race will take more winning than the betting suggests.

He said: "The draw could be important, as I think we could get a biggish field and those Queen Anne horses are pretty tough to beat."

He did not hesitate when asked for one more to look out for from what will inevitably be a strong team from Clarehaven Stables, and said: "Highgarden will hopefully run in the Lillie Langtry over a mile and six furlongs and she's been crying out for the step up in trip. She's a nice, big, classy filly."

Roger Teal is undecided regarding a target for 2,000 Guineas runner-up Tip Two Win, who is due to have a racecourse gallop at Newbury.

The colt would need supplementing at a cost of £70,000 for the Sussex and has the Group 2 Qatar Lennox Stakes as an alternative.
