Everything you need to know for the Lambourn Good Friday open day
Visitors to Lambourn's popular Sir Peter O'Sullevan open day on Friday will be treated to a glimpse of the imposing Sprinter Sacre and be able to witness legendary 20-time champion jockey Sir Anthony McCoy's return to the saddle – on the back of a camel.
Dual Champion Chase hero Sprinter Sacre will be paraded along with Cheltenham Gold Cup winners Coneygree and Bobs Worth and two-time Champion Hurdle ace Buveur D'Air as part of the afternoon's attractions, which also include McCoy joining forces with Jamie Osborne, Lucy Barry and Oliver Sherwood's assistant Andy Llewellyn in a camel race against Nico de Boinville, Noel Fehily, Brendan Powell and John Francome.
McCoy also takes part in the showjumping with Osborne and Sara Bradstock and joked: "There was a time they used to have bungee-jumping and I got pushed off a crane – as far as I'm aware I'm not doing that this year!"
He added: "It's for a great cause and it's well organised and well run. I'd love to see more non-racing people involved and interested because it would show how well these racehorses are looked after, but even for racing people, who go racing a lot but might not get to yards, it's nice for them to see.
"We do a lot of defending of welfare of horses, but people on the outside have no idea how well they're looked after, so this is a chance to see it for themselves."
Those who do attend are likely to be greeted by fine weather with temperatures in Lambourn set to rise above 20C.
A Met Office spokeswoman said: "We're looking at definitely a dry day, warm with plenty of sunshine around. Perhaps there'll be a bit of cloud building through the afternoon but mainly a dry sunny day with temperatures certainly widely in the high teens, but possibly peaking just above 20C."
Yards including Nicky Henderson's historic Seven Barrows base, Sherwood's Grand National-winning stable, as well as the homes of Clive Cox, Charlie Hills and Warren Greatrex, open from 8.30am until 1pm, while other afternoon entertainment includes farrier displays, a parade of the Vine and Craven Foxhounds and motorbike thrills from the Stannage International Stunt Team.
Freddie Tulloch's Outside Chance Bar is open from noon with live music from 4.30pm.
Admission for the full day costs £15 and £10 for the afternoon only. Proceeds go to the Lambourn Valley Housing Trust, Thames Valley Air Ambulance and other local causes.
