Elliott ready to resume after some of his string cough after Punchestown

Gordon Elliott, who has had no runners since May 4, has revealed some of his Punchestown festival runners subsequently coughed as he looked forward to once again being represented on racecourses next week.

Elliott expects to be back in action on Wednesday at Punchestown, where his dream of winning a first trainers' championship last month was shattered for the second year running when an unstoppable Willie Mullins overturned a big deficit and finished the season with an even bigger lead.

In the highest-profile of all Elliott's reverses, young superstar Samcro lost his unbeaten record when falling in the Punchestown Champion Hurdle.

Elliott – who in an otherwise spectacular campaign won last season's Grand National, Irish Grand National and had eight Cheltenham Festival successes – said: "We had a few horses run below expectations at the Punchestown festival. A few of ours didn't scope clean and we had a bit of coughing, so we decided to give the team an easy week.

"Many of them had a busy season and, taking everything into consideration, it seemed the right thing to do. I'd imagine we'll have a few runners on Wednesday."

Elliott has had 11 runners and just one winner since the start of the new jumps season.

His most recent success came on the Flat at Clonmel on May 3 when Scealai Aonair scored.
