Impressive debut winner Positive may attempt to underline his potential in the Vintage Stakes at the Qatar Goodwood festival, as Clive Cox eyes the seven furlong Group 2 for the promising juvenile colt.

Positive looks to have a bright future after bolting up by five lengths against eight rivals in a Salisbury maiden last month, and Cox is optimistic he can build on that performance.

"It’s early days for him yet but he's an exciting horse," said Cox. "It was a pleasing introduction and he has plenty of scope.

"We really like him and I know the family well but there's a long way to go. He won't be going to Newmarket this week but I will probably give him an entry for the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood."

Cox is uncertain at this stage what will be the best distance for the son of Dutch Art but he showed so much speed there is every chance he would be just as effective at a shorter trip.

The trainer would be delighted if Positive proved to be good enough in time to have a crack at one of his favourite races, the July Cup, which he has won with Lethal Force and Harry Angel.

Cox added: "Sadly I’ve got nothing for the race this year and, of course, it's too early to say whether Positive would be the sort of horse for that race next season."
