Coronation of King Charles to take place on 2,000 Guineas day in May 2023

The coronation of King Charles III will take place on May 6 next year on the same day that the 2,000 Guineas is set to be run at Newmarket.

The BHA is understood to be considering the implications of the announcement in relation to fixtures due to be held that day.

There are five further meetings scheduled in Britain at Doncaster, Goodwood, Thirsk, Hexham and Uttoxeter.

The Jockey Club, which runs both of Newmarket's courses, said it was too early to comment about the announcement.

The coronation will take place at Westminster Abbey in London and be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby. The King will be crowned alongside his wife Camilla, the Queen Consort.

The King enjoyed his first winner in the royal silks with Just Fine at Leicester this month, while Perfect Alibi's Beckford Stakes success at Yarmouth on Monday was a first Listed victory for the monarch.

The coronation will be the first for almost 70 years, the last being for Elizabeth II in June 1953, and the first held on a Saturday since Edward VII in 1902.

It is not yet known whether there will be an extra bank holiday added or moved to the coronation weekend, with a bank holiday already scheduled for Monday, May 1.

Buckingham Palace said the ceremony would "reflect the monarch's role today and looks towards the future" while staying "rooted in long-standing traditions and pageantry".

As well as the Guineas, the coronation will clash with a full programme of Premier League games and the final afternoon of the regular English Football League season.

There had been speculation last week that the coronation would take place on June 3, the same day as the Derby at Epsom and the FA Cup final.
