Kelleway team spreads into Newmarket as numbers increase
Gay Kelleway has expanded her Exning operation into nearby Newmarket after taking a barn at Jon Scargill's yard at Red House Stables on Hamilton Road.
Still the only woman to ride a winner at Royal Ascot on Sprowston Boy in 1987, Kelleway is hoping to train one at next week's fixture, where she has a couple of entries including Black Orange, who goes under the hammer at the Goffs London sale on Monday night.
Kelleway, who does well with her runners in France, is now less inclined to train from the other side of the English Channel and has taken on a 16-box barn to complement her 30-box set up at Queen Alexandra Stables in Exning.
French raids planned
She said: "It's not ideal having two yards but numbers are up, so we had to find somewhere and it seems to be working fine.
"I have 12 horses at Red House Stables and most of those will be off to Deauville in August, where we hope to have plenty of runners. I haven't entirely given up hope of training in France but for now I'm on the lookout for a 50-box yard here to have all the horses under one roof."
If she stays put, Kelleway would prefer there to be a system of licensing combined trainers, as in Australasia.
She added: "If I combined with someone like Jane Chapple-Hyam, who is a friend, we could have 80 horses together, which would be a formidable force. They have combined trainers in Australia and New Zealand and it's a system that seems to work well."
