James Garfield will be first Breeders' Cup runner for trainer Scott
George Scott will have his first Breeders' Cup runner when James Garfield lines up in the Juvenile Turf on November 3 fresh from giving his trainer a first Group-race success in Britain.
The son of Exceed And Excel landed the Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury last month under Frankie Dettori and the Italian will again be on board at Del Mar when he will be seeking a fourth victory in the Grade 1 event.
However, it will not be a new experience for owner Bill Gredley, who said: "I've been to Del Mar before when I had horses trained at Santa Anita a long time ago and it will be nice to go back.
"We've already got Frankie booked and hopefully it's a fun trip. He was staying on well at the end over six furlongs at Newbury, so we'd hope he'll get a mile at Del Mar which is very sharp."
Gredley, who was selling the juvenile's half-sister by Sea The Stars at Tattersalls on Wednesday, is not worried about the prospect of James Garfield going around a tight bend for the first time. He said: "He's a well-balanced horse, but we'll be sending him around a few bends at home in the next few weeks to make sure!"
James Garfield is a 7-1 chance with Paddy Power for the Juvenile Turf.
Also heading for California is Irish Champion Stakes winner Decorated Knight, who has been given the option of ending his career in the Breeders' Cup Turf, for which he is an 8-1 chance with Paddy Power.
The five-year-old also has the alternative of the Mile, for which he is also an 8-1 chance, at the championships on November 4.
Tony Nerses, racing manager to owners Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar, said: "Decorated Knight is to run at the Breeders' Cup, where he'll have the option of running in the Mile or the Turf.
"He showed he liked going around a bend left-handed at Leopardstown and the likely fast ground at Del Mar should suit him very well. He also could tackle the Qipco Champion Stakes, but a decision on that will be made nearer the time."
