Local trainers described the torrential rain that caused the cancellation of Cheltenham on Friday as the worst in recent memory, although there is optimism racing at the weekend will be able to go ahead.

Cheltenham officials called off the first day of the November meeting after heavy and persistent rain caused waterlogging at the course, and the challenging weather conditions were experienced by yards around the area.

Kim Bailey, who trains eight miles from Cheltenham racecourse, arrived to snow on the ground at his yard on Thursday morning before rain swept in.
