The future of Ireland’s pony racing circuit looks more promising as organisers are confident they will be able to secure an insurance quote by the end of next week and strike a deal to save one of the most important grassroots sectors of Irish racing.

An insurance extension until June 4 had enabled the first three meetings of the year to be staged, but organisers have been in limbo since.

Racing was allowed to take place last weekend in Moira, County Down, under the British insurance policy but this weekend’s fixture in Castleisland, first run in 1859, has been postponed. Further meetings at Thomastown and Letterkenny have also been postponed.
