The key players in German racing: the trainers and jockeys to note at Hanover
There are a number of names in the German training ranks that will be familiar to racing fans outside of the country, although the man currently leading the trainers' championship is unlikely to be one of them.
Frank Fuhrmann, based in Moser in north-eastern Germany, has saddled 11 winners from 83 starters in 2020 with €33,000 banked in prize-money in the process. He finished fourth in last year's trainers' standings.
A more familiar figure is former champion trainer Markus Klug, who is perhaps best known for his handling of runaway 2014 Deutsches Derby winner Sea The Moon.
Klug was champion trainer in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018 before finishing third behind Henk Grewe and Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Andreas Wohler last year.
Other names worth noting at Hanover on Thursday are Peter Schiergen, trainer of Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Danedream, and Dominik Moser, who looks to have a leading contender for the 6½f Listed contest in Namos.
When it comes to jockeys, Maxim Pecheur leads the standings so far in 2020 and has struck up a particularly strong relationship with Klug, with the pair claiming Classic victories with the likes of Windstoss in the 2017 Deutsches Derby and Diamanta in last year's Preis der Diana.
Pecheur finished second in the jockeys' championship last year to Bauyrzhan Murzabayev, who was born in Kazakhstan and rode successfully in the Czech Republic before moving to Germany. He was appointed stable jockey to Andreas Wohler last year.
Commenting on the appointment of Murzabayez to stable number one last year in place of the longstanding Eduardo Pedroza, Wohler wrote on his website: "It was obvious that the talented young man would eventually succeed him. But now that a real run started on him and several tempting offers were on the table, one had to act to be able to count on him in the future."
