In 94 previous editions Etienne Pollet had been the only trainer to saddle a 1-2 in the Arc, thanks to the exploits of La Sorellina, who beat her half-brother Silnet by a head in 1953.

Naturally there were plenty of disappointed trainers at Chantilly after the great race, but the magnitude of Aidan O'Brien's 1-2-3 in Europe's showpiece event drew universal praise.

And it was the man who most frequently has to go toe-to-toe with O'Brien, Dermot Weld, that led the plaudits.
