California Chrome steams towards Breeders' Cup with easy victory

California Chrome will go to the Breeders' Cup Classic on the back of a flawless season after an easy victory over old rival Dortmund in the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes on Saturday, the main Santa Anita trial for America's richest race.

Pressed by the giant Dortmund, the 2-5 shot set fast fractions which had his opponent in trouble before the far turn, establishing a five-length advantage in the stretch.

The winning margin was two and a quarter lengths after he was virtually pulled up by Victor Espinoza in what was another professional performance by the Dubai World Cup winner, unbeaten in six in 2016 and now general even-money favourite for the Classic with British and Irish bookmakers.
