Appleby hands Hells Babe Listed assignment

Mick Appleby heads to Germany on Wednesday, where Hells Babe and Alistair Rawlinson face seven rivals in the Listed Coolmore Stud Baden-Baden Cup (5.40pm BST) over seven furlongs.

Hells Babe was fourth last time at Musselburgh behind subsequent German 1,000 Guineas winner Unforgetable Filly – although the future exploits of Hugo Palmer's performer did not have a bearing on Appleby's choice of target.

"She's done very well and the form of her last run at Musselburgh has really worked out," he said on Tuesday. "We'd already decided we were going to go to Baden-Baden.

"We had her in at Tipperary as well but that looked a tougher race and we've been struggling to find races for her in Britain."

Appleby has previously saddled runners at Dortmund and Cologne but Rawlinson – who steered Hells Babe to success at York in May –will be having his first experience of racing in Germany.

Shy Witch, who represents the combination of Hans-Jurgen Groschel and Eduardo Pedrosa, must shoulder a 4lb penalty for the successful defence of her title in the Group 3 Stutenmeile at the Hamburg Derby meeting, a race in which the Archie Watson-trained Absolute Blast finished third.

Celebrity ran out an easy winner of a conditions race at Hannover last time out, having previously finished seventh behind Unforgetable Filly in the Guineas at Dusseldorf in June.
