'I'm very upset' - Chamings gutted after stewards take another race off him
Pat Chamings was left cursing his luck at Ascot on Saturday when Charles Molson was demoted having been first past the post in the 7f handicap – the second time in two months the trainer has lost a race following intervention from the stewards.
Chamings, who is based in Hampshire, was floored at Goodwood in May when Spanish Star was placed second after interference and stablemate Charles Molson suffered the same fate at Ascot as officials deemed he had bumped Breanski, noting that horse "became tight for room, losing momentum before then running on to be beaten by a diminishing nose at the line".
The placings were reversed – much to the dismay of Chamings, who has saddled five winners in Britain this season.
"I'm very upset," he said. "For a small trainer like me to have this happen twice in a season is unbelievable. It's just bad luck, but that's life."
Daniel Muscutt rode Charles Molson and added: "Pat's a hard-working trainer and has a small string so it's unfortunate the race has been taken off us.
"The horse has a got a bit lonely in front and rolled over, but I felt the revised winner had enough time to get past me. I thought I did enough within my control to counteract my horse hanging."
Muscutt was suspended for four days for careless riding and, when asked if he felt the reversal was harsh, replied: "The stewards have got a job to do."
On the other hand, Finley Marsh, who partnered Breanski, was convinced justice had been done.
He said: "I was 1,000-1 on to get it. I was confident there was enough interference. He came across and gave his horse a couple of smacks when he's made contact, while my horse was going for a great run. It's racing and it will happen to everyone, but the stewards have made the right decision."
Connections of the Jedd O'Keeffe-trained Breanski were in agreement.
The five-year-old is owned by the Quantum syndicate, whose Peter Mellett said: "We were pretty confident and Finley was strong when he came in.
"We always thought we'd get the race, but the stewards never like changing it, do they? It's never easy and the stewards have got to be sure, but Jedd was on the phone straight away from York and was adamant it should have been overturned. We were stopped and did well to even get back up."
