'He's too big a price' - key quotes on Tuesday of the Cheltenham Festival
The first day of Cheltenham is here! Tuesday's action is headlined by the Unibet Champion Hurdle (3.30) while there is a mouthwatering line-up in the Sky Bet Supreme Novices' Hurdle (1.30) to kick off a fabulous four days of racing in the Cotswolds. Read on for the day's most revealing quotes from all seven of today's Cheltenham races.
Day one racecards | Big-race tips | Watch In The Know
Sky Bet Supreme Novices' Hurdle (Grade 1) | 2m½f | 4yo+ | ITV/RTV
Nicky Henderson, trainer of Jonbon:
"Jonbon has done absolutely nothing wrong at all. I think he's been equally as good [as Constitution Hill]; he's been flawless. Haydock was horrible ground last time but look at the form of the race now and it was a bloody good performance. He's got a ton of pace and you'd be pretty sure there's going to be a good pace on."
Overnight price: 5-1 (generally)
Why this horse can win the 2022 Sky Bet Supreme Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham
Sporting Life Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices' Chase (Grade 1) | 2m | 5yo+ | ITV/RTV
Joe Tizzard, assistant trainer of War Lord:
"I think he's too big a price. We're going to struggle to turn around Sandown form with Edwardstone but there's no reason why he couldn't nick a place. He jumps well and, if they go a good gallop, he'll be doing his best work at the end."
Overnight price: 33-1
Ultima Handicap Chase (Grade 3) | 3m1f | 5yo+ | ITV/RTV
Jessica Harrington, trainer of Discordantly:
"He was sixth in this race last year and has probably gone over in better form than ever. He travelled over great and the ground should be perfect for him. He won a nice pot at Leopardstown just over a week ago and it was very hard to leave a race like that behind us. We've done very little with him since and, while he has a 5lb penalty, we think he has a good chance."
Overnight odds: 22-1
Unibet Champion Hurdle (Grade 1) | 2m½f | 4yo+ | ITV/RTV
Willie Mullins, trainer of Appreciate It:
"He's been doing everything right at home under David Casey, who is his work-rider all the time. He's very happy with him and I'm happy with what I'm seeing. I hope he's done enough work and we're happy that he has – we couldn't get much more work into him. He's schooled well and at home he's doing all the right things. He's a sensible horse and shouldn't be fazed on the day."
Overnight price: 7-2
Cheltenham Festival tips: one key runner from each ITV race on Tuesday
Close Brothers Mares' Hurdle (Grade 1) | 2m4f | 4yo+ | ITV/RTV
Gordon Elliott, trainer of Queens Brook:
"I have to say I was delighted with her run at Punchestown as she needed it. I liked the way she went to the line there. This slightly longer trip will suit and all her form suggests she has got a live chance."
Overnight price: 4-1
Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) | 2m½f | 4yo | RTV
Paul Nolan, trainer of HMS Seahorse:
"He's in good form and, being a Galileo, he should stay and handle the nicer ground. His mark seems okay but all the chat is about Willie's [Gaelic Warrior]. If they are right about him, he could be impossible to beat. Hopefully our lad jumps well enough. If he does, he has a solid each-way chance."
Overnight price: 9-1
Cheltenham tips: Tom Segal, Paul Kealy and David Jennings share their best bet
National Hunt Challenge Cup Amateur Jockeys' Novices' Chase (Grade 2) | 3m6f | 5yo+ | RTV
Gordon Elliott, trainer of Run Wild Fred:
"Run Wild Fred looks tailor-made for this. His Troytown win, Irish Grand National second and being placed in a Grade 1 all stack up really nicely and he must have a massive chance."
Overnight price: 7-4
