'He is bordering on Group class' - unlucky losers on day five at Goodwood
The fifth day of Glorious Goodwood featured plenty of classy performances, including from Commanche Falls in the Stewards' Cup, but there was also a fair share of hard-luck stories. Here are a few of those who looked unlucky on Saturday...
Stone Of Destiny
1.40 Goodwood
He was a contender for unluckiest loser of the week in the Stewards’ Sprint. Having got back on an even keel after his customary tardy start, he found his path continuously blocked from halfway and deserves credit for finishing as close as he did. He is a frustrating sort on a lengthy losing run and his style of racing means he always needs things to drop right, but he is down to a good mark and confirmed the ability is still there. The Portland handicap at the St Leger meeting, a race he won in 2020, could be the race for him.

Euchen Glen
2.10 Goodwood
He has slipped in the weights and looked unlucky back up in distance in the Summer Handicap. Jim Goldie’s veteran is always a hostage to fortune in big fields given his run-style and things did not pan out for him, being trapped behind a wall of horses for much of the home straight and only getting clear in the last 175 yards. He left the impression he would have just won with a clear run and it will be interesting to see if this can be backed up in the Ebor, a race in which he is currently around 25-1 for.

He is another to keep an eye on from that 1m6f handicap on his first run since making his hurdles debut in December. The Richard Hughes-trained four-year-old, who was in fine form on the all-weather in the second half of last season, was making ground when running out of room at a crucial stage but he stuck to his task well in the last half furlong. It is not inconceivable that the step up to 2m could suit and he’s one to note either on turf or the all-weather.

He did not so much have a nightmare passage, but he was unlucky in the sense that for the second year in succession, he fared the best of those that raced in the wrong group in this race. Even though the two identical groups merged with a two furlongs to run, he was marooned away from the main action, so deserves plenty of credit for finishing as close as he did. He is bordering on Group class, is relatively fresh for this time of year and it will be a surprise if he does not win a nice pot with more luck before the season is out.
