Low-numbers held sway in a bigger field here 12 months ago but the best pace looks to be middle to high this time around. That may possibly count against 2018 winner Tommy G, who is joined by his siblings Primo's Comet (fourth last year) and the unexposed and promising Call Me Ginger. The latter has a big race in him at some point but the pair to appeal most this time are Rewaayat and BATCHELOR BOY. Rewaayat had promised better last year and it's all clicked this summer with his Salisbury rout three weeks ago backed up by the clock. Whether he can cope with Batchelor Boy, who is still unexposed himself and who will surely benefit from this return to 6f, remains to be seen though.
While Laafy should run very well for the third time in a row this season, there are other serious players. Mark Johnston has three who bring mixed messages but must be considered, headed perhaps by the Royal Ascot fourth Themaxwecan. Preference, though, is for CALLING THE WIND who left a very favourable impression with his win at Ascot. Quloob is worth a second look for Gary Moore who had the 50-1 winner of a 1m2f handicap here on Thursday.
This could turn out to be a select field, featuring the very in-form Manuela De Vega and two 3yos in Cabaletta and Snow who have accomplished less but bring clear potential for their step up to 1m6f. It's a tricky choice between those three, with Cabaletta slightly preferred, but the selection has to be ENBIHAAR who produced a storming display to make this race on good to firm ground the pick of her four wins last season. John Gosden's mare did not live up to favouritism at Newmarket three weeks ago but shaped as if this return to 1m6f will help produce a much better show today.
William Haggas doesn't have many sprint handicappers but he has still won this race twice in 12 years, with a 1-2 in 2008. This year he has a solid candidate in NAHAARR who was hard to fault when winning at Newbury and should have a career beyond handicaps in due course. The 3yos Lexington Dash, who had impressed at Newmarket before battling unsuccessfully with soft ground on the July course, and Meraas can have cases made and it would be no surprise to see Mr Lupton pop his head up off a very favourable mark. Hey Jonesy was clearly expected when ending a two-year losing run in the Wokingham and it's not inconceivable that he could follow up here. Those old Trojans Summerghand and Gulliver can never be left out safely at this level.
A return to form is required from HOMESPIN but he can be excused his Newmarket reappearance run (he became unbalanced) and has plenty in his favour, as he won at Glorious Goodwood last year and his trainer has a fine record in this race. Mister Snowdon,Cold Front, Society Lion and King Ragnar have progressive profiles, while Tomfre has the form to figure, but the main danger could come from Corvair who did well to finish fourth at Pontefract last time given the ground he lost at the start.
An interesting maiden in which the market promises to tell plenty more. Golden Flame has run well in both starts and is very high on the list but preference is for TITIAN, who made a very promising debut at Newmarket three weeks ago and is a potential improver now. Forever Forward and interesting newcomer Tasfeeq are others of strong interest.
Muraad has an appealing profile but the one concern is that he faces competition for the lead, including from two Mark Johnston-trained 3yos who would also be interesting if there wasn't so much potential pace up front. This could set up nicely for EXEC CHEF, who may also be helped by first-time headgear on his debut for a new yard. He's very well handicapped on his best form. Second choice is bottom-weight Kuwait Shield who, like the selection, may show the benefit of cheekpieces and a strongly run race. City Wanderer and Hats Off To Larry should go well for Mick Channon.
