Gibson says goodbye to 'buddy' Gold-Fun after fatal fall

Trainer Richard Gibson was yesterday struggling to come to terms with the loss of his "buddy" Gold-Fun, who was put down after sustaining serious injuries in the closing stages of the Prix Maurice de Gheest.

The seven-year-old, narrowly beaten by Twilight Son in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on his previous outing, suffered catastrophic fractures of both forelegs when launching his challenge inside the final furlong at Deauville.

Rider Christophe Soumillon was stood down following the fall, and Gibson said: "The number one priority was Christophe, and thank God he was okay. To be honest it’s not sunk in and the last thing I expected to be doing today is giving an obituary for Gold-Fun."
