Former jump jockey Wayne Knox dies at the age of 56
Wayne Knox, a jump jockey who rode in Britain from the early 1980s to the early 1990s, died in hospital on Tuesday at the age of 56.
Knox, who enjoyed a particularly fruitful association with Rusty Roc on whom he won eight times, mainly rode for Dai Burchell, Peter Harris, John Edwards and Richard Lee.
Trainer Venetia Williams said: “It’s sad news. He was an excellent jockey. I worked with Wayne when I was assistant to John Edwards – he rode there at the time. He was also a big help to me when I was riding as an amateur.”
She added: “He was well over six foot tall, so it’s amazing that he could do the weight. He came to Aramstone and rode out for us for two years, joining his son Joe, between 2015-16.”
Burchell said: "Wayne must have ridden 15 winners for us, including a couple of doubles. We had some great times together. It was a big shock when I heard the news."
Funeral details have yet to be announced.
