Lewes, once a hotbed of racing, is in danger of being wiped off the sport's map with another trainer leaving the East Sussex town which still had a racecourse 60 years ago.

Suzy Smith's move across Sussex to take part of the Angmering stable relinquished by William Knight's move to Newmarket in April leaves Lewes with just two trainers, Mark Hoad and Suzi Best, where there were once dozens in the vicinity to rival Newmarket and Lambourn.

Towser Gosden was one of the town's most influential trainers in the middle of the 20th century, sending out Aggressor to win the 1960 King George at Ascot, and his son John Gosden gave his view on the decline.
