Million-pound contests between multi-million pound horses are all very well but racing is about much more than that – as Harbour Law joyfully reminded us on Town Moor.

Across the sea Juddmonte, the Aga Khan and Coolmore were clashing head-on in a star-studded Irish Champion Stakes but their choicely bred thoroughbreds are only the tip of a much larger pyramid.

It is those at the base whose unsung efforts are vital to keeping the whole show on the road, striving at a level where there is decidedly less glamour – or money.
