There is many a fine tune played on an old fiddle and the St Leger, born in 1776, soared to splendid heights yesterday with a cockle-warmer of a result that had “great for the game” stamped all over it.

Driving to Doncaster through relentless rain it was hard not to ponder that we could be in for a somewhat soulless final Classic of the season with hot favourite Idaho one of three Ballydoyle runners in the market’s first four.

“And not a pulse-quickener in the whole field,” you might have mused. But you would have mused wrong because, unheralded and unexpected except by everyone who doesn’t answer to the name Mongan, Harbour Law laid it down late and strong to land one of the great giantkilling Classic victories.
