Brave new world for Mullins following first Classic success
A change of tactics with Wicklow Brave worked a dream for Willie Mullins when the seven-year-old made all for Frankie Dettori to shock 1-7 favourite Order Of St George, who was attempting to win the Palmerstown House Estate Irish St Leger for the second consecutive year.
Wicklow Brave, third in the race a year ago when beaten 11 and a half lengths by Order Of St George, gave Mullins, Ireland's champion jumps trainer, a first Classic win. The plan now is to head to Australia for the Melbourne Cup, for which he is 20-1 with BoyleSports and Paddy Power (from 33) .
After the versatile performer, who won the County Hurdle at Cheltenham last year, had held the hotpot by half a length, Mullins said: "With only four runners we thought there mightn't be any pace in the race and after ringing Ruby [Walsh], who rode Wicklow Brave in his last bit of work, before he won on Westerner Lady at Listowel, we decided to make the running.
