Hindsight is usually the irritating prerogative of after-timers and told-you-so merchants, both of whom are suitable candidates for a gentle garroting.

However, sometimes looking back gives you genuine perspective and it is now ten years since Kauto Star won his first Gold Cup.

But his Cheltenham triumph has to be seen in the context of his entire 2006-07 season that, when you give it some thought, all but beggars belief.
