Dermot Weld: legendary trainer out to prove Champions Day hit again with Tarnawa
Ascot's Champions Day has provided Dermot Weld with several memorable triumphs over the past decade. Sapphire struck in the Champions Fillies' & Mares Stakes in 2012 and the trainer has high hopes of a repeat with Tarnawa on Saturday.
Weld, who is also represented by outsider Imaging in the QE II Stakes, had a double at the fixture in 2012 – with Rite Of Passage landing the Long Distance Cup, a race he won again with Forgotten Rules two years later – and the following year Fascinating Rock added to the Rosewell House coffers with victory in the Champion Stakes.
Tarnawa, who remained a maiden after a three-race juvenile career which included a debut third behind subsequent dual 1,000 Guineas winner Hermosa at Galway, has won four of her six races this season, most recently giving Weld a fourth consecutive success in the Group 2 Blandford Stakes at the Curragh.
