Plenty of wrong turns along the way but Marsha firmly on the right path
Sir Mark Prescott will saddle his first runner at the Breeders' Cup when Marsha contests the Turf Sprint on Saturday. Here, in the fourth of his daily diary instalments, his assistant William Butler provides an update on preparations
The anticipation is starting to build over here. Most of the overseas connections have now arrived. Perhaps because it's the end of season everyone is very relaxed, which has created a really good atmosphere.
Marsha was fine at evening stables after her first canter on the track and a lead out and pick of grass to continue her usual routine. She did the same exercise this morning and we're all happy and counting down the hours.
Racing started yesterday at Del Mar and the encouraging factor for Team Marsha was how far back the winner came from in the five-furlong race. He was probably eight to ten lengths back early on but still came through to win easily.
All the US judges who were trying to convince us it was a track for closers were quick to say: "We told you so.2 I hope they're right on Saturday.
It was very interesting to witness one of the races from the stalls. There were nearly two stalls handlers for each horse, which really speeded up the loading process – something from which courses at home could learn.
Team Marsha has been swelled by the arrival of Elite Racing's manager Dan Downie last night, when I was very kindly invited to dinner by Keeneland Sales, which was great fun with good company.
Marsha and her wellbeing aside, my main worry on this trip was driving in the US, something I'm doing for the first time. I usually delegate that to my wife.
The driving has been fine but my navigational skills have left plenty to be desired. Even with Google maps I've yet to make any journey without at least one wrong turn and this has got worse since Luke Morris's arrival as co-driver.
We gave Tony Nerses a lift back from the track yesterday and I'm sure he thought he was on a real estate tour after seeing most of Del Mar.
