Frankel and Harry Angel on display at Stanhope's Newmarket exhibition

The painting here of Harry Angel and Adam Kirby will be among those on display at Jacqueline Stanhope’s annual art exhibition at Tattersalls Sales, Newmarket, from Wednesday until December 7.

Frankel and Tom Queally are also the subject of an original painting, while other works include portraits of Galileo, Ulysses, Winter, Lope De Vega, along with various racing and stud scenes.

Across the pond at Keeneland, Sir Alfred Munnings’ painting A Morning’s Work, Newmarket Heath was sold for the not inconsiderable total of $186,300, including buyer premium.

That was the highlight of the fifth annual Sporting Art Auction, a collaborative effort between Keeneland and Cross Gate Gallery of Lexington, the country’s foremost gallery of fine sporting art.

Munnings’ Heading Home sold for $115,000 including buyer premium, while gross sales for the auction totalled $2,426,040.

Jacob chips in

There was good news for the Midlands Air Ambulance charity, and the racing community it supports, when a meeting at Ludlow raised £1,850 for the organisation.

A behind-the-scenes day started at Henry Daly’s nearby stables, followed by lunch at the racecourse and a meet-and-greet with Grand National-winning jockey Daryl Jacob.

Abbie Hawkins, events co-ordinator at Midlands Air Ambulance, says: “We have a great affiliation with the horse-riding community. They are great supporters of our lifesaving air ambulances, but unfortunately this is partly due to the fact that on average the aircrew airlifts a horse-rider every four days.

“Our behind-the-scenes raceday was a money-can’t-buy experience, and was thanks to Ludlow racecourse, professional pundit Ryan Tongue, Jamie Moore, who donated a pair of signed breeches, and the team at Henry Daly’s stables.

“The money raised has enabled us to purchase five brand-new and much-needed flight suits for the aircrew.”

Skelton the first to reach 100

Congratulations to trainer Dan Skelton for bringing up his century this week.

Skelton was first trainer to 100 by a distance and, while Paul Nicholls leads the way on prize-money, he can be backed at 25-1 for the title with bet365, Ladbrokes and William Hill – Paddy Power go only 10-1. There must be worse 25-1 chances out there!
