There is a humility to Jack Kennedy that almost makes you wonder where the edge is. With most elite sportspeople, it is something you can practically touch. Just think of the jump jockeys who set the standard of late.

Ruby Walsh wore it blatantly, that piercing expression and curt demeanour a constant reminder of his ruthless instinct.

You don’t have to look too hard to see that Davy Russell has something the rest of us don’t, Sir Anthony McCoy was utterly consumed by ambition, and that voracious competitive streak is there in Barry Geraghty as well, for all that his charisma might conceal it on the surface.
