Boxes need unpacking but it's winning races that fixates record-breaking rider

Lee Mottershead catches up with a jockey eager to resume where she left off

This time last year Hollie Doyle was already well on her way to raising one notable ceiling. Now she has her mind on flooring. It is, she hopes, only a brief diversion from what had become the norm.

Doyle is a record breaker. In 2019 she rode 116 winners, bettering the previous high for a female jockey of 106, set by Josephine Gordon only two years earlier. The bumper tally placed her ninth in the calendar table, just 20 victories behind the man in fourth position, her partner Tom Marquand.

Soon enough Doyle and Marquand will have new floors laid in the Hungerford home they moved into last summer. Marquand, however, is currently an awfully long way from both Doyle and the floors. For while one half of the relationship has been firing in winners in Britain, the other has been making a very big name for himself on the other side of world.
