Bjorn Nielsen: 'It was truly mutual with Frankie - he wanted to jump off Strad'

Julian Muscat meets up with the owner-breeder of the mighty Stradivarius

Eight years have passed since Bjorn Nielsen had his picture taken with an unnamed chestnut foal. The homebred colt was lying down in a paddock, his placid eye blissfully unaware of the journey he was about to embark on.

"It was the only time I've had my photo taken with one of my foals," Nielsen recalls, "and it happened to be Stradivarius. Maybe it was a sign."

The photo has just been framed. Together with a treasure chest of trophies and assorted memorabilia, it will become part of a shrine to Stradivarius when the great horse has run his last race.
