After Donnacha O’Brien recorded a narrow points victory over Colin Keane in a gruelling jockeys’ championship decider, he was compelled to deny that he was about to hang up his gloves.

“You are all absolutely mad for me to retire!” he quipped after securing his second title at Naas following an enthralling 12-rounder with Keane.

The truth is quite the opposite. O’Brien has established himself as one of the best riders in the business, with a reputation for being as hungry and efficient on low-key days as he is composed and reliable on the big occasion.
