Along with Winx and Enable, the third member of world racing's extraordinary cast of leading ladies is Almond Eye. Her entourage's decision to stay at home for the second half of the year was initially a disappointment to European fans but, for the fact that the wonder-filly and her trainer Sakae Kunieda's presence in Japan helped persuade plenty of his countrymen to go where she was not, we must be grateful.
In particular, the way in which owner Toji Morita and trainer Mitsuru Hashida attacked some of the best races in Europe with Deirdre provided a thread through the second half of the season to lift the heart.
