Grundy
I was very, very lucky because I had so many good horses but Grundy was a star, an extraordinary horse really. He was very flashy in lots of ways but he was just very good. He won the famous King George at Ascot but my favourite race he won was the Derby. It's a wonderful day out, and to win was very exciting. It's such an iconic race. He was so easy during his races, as he was such a wonderful mover and had such a good action. He sent a shiver down my spine.

Buckskin
A marvellous horse. He arrived from Angel Penna in France as a five-year-old and he had terrible feet so we had a look at that. Then he won the Prix du Cadran very easily indeed – that was run in the spring in those days – but he got beaten in the Gold Cup [fourth behind Shangamuzo] when the ground was very bad. Mr Wildenstein was upset and said he didn't want boys riding horses – and he was talking about Pat Eddery. Having counted to about 100 I told them that if Pat couldn't ride them they could go and take their horses with them. I had a very short romance with Mr Wildenstein but you could fill the Albert Hall with his former trainers.

Polygamy
She was a good two-year-old but she was tiny, really very small, so I never thought she would train on. But she won the Group 3 Guineas Trial at Ascot on her first start at three and then was beaten a short head by Highclere in the Guineas. She was very unlucky not to win as she got stopped when the other horse came across her. But we managed to win the Oaks with her.
