Brigadier Gerard gained his name from the hero of the books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a favourite of the colt's owner-breeder John Hislop. The fictional Brigadier Etienne Gerard is an officer in the Hussars de Conflans, part of Napoleon's army, a dashing, brave, vain, slightly self-absorbed young cavalryman whose adventures stand the test of time for the reader. Gerard may not be as well known as Conan Doyle's almost ubiquitous Sherlock Holmes, but he deserves to be.
