Charlie Deutsch will never be able to explain why he behaved so recklessly on the night of Liam Treadwell's retirement party, when a moment of madness triggered a chain of events that turned into a nightmare – a nightmare entirely of his own making.
However, fortunately for him he has a wise and sympathetic boss in Venetia Williams, and he has learned first hand what others have found before him – that when an individual is in trouble the racing community really does rally round.
He took great comfort during a mercifully short stay in prison from the many letters he received from trainers, owners and weighing room colleagues, as well as from family and friends, and his rehabilitation since his release on August 1 is gathering pace.
