Ireland's progress towards modernising laws around betting reached another staging post last week with the appointment of the new chief executive designate of its Gambling Regulatory Authority.

Anne Marie Caulfield, who has held a number of senior civil service positions, is set to take a role expected to become operational next year. It will have responsibility for regulating both in-person and online gambling, gambling advertising, gambling websites and apps.

Plans to update gambling regulation in Ireland were mooted as long ago as 2013 but new laws have been long delayed. However, legislation is being prepared for publication in the autumn.
