Eight winners from 12 rides: super Buick the big winner as he dominates Goodwood

The Racing Post's awards honour the best (and sometimes worst) performances and raise talking points from the last seven days of racing. This week's winners are . . .

Jockey of the week

William Buick

The race to be champion jockey has long since been over as a contest, but much like Liverpool continuing to knock in the goals against Bournemouth on Saturday, William Buick is continuing to emphasise his dominance by racking up winner after winner.

Godolphin's number one had a sensational week, headlined by a 708-1 five-timer at Goodwood on Saturday, which included a clean sweep of the three Group prizes on offer. Not content there, Buick added a treble at the same track on Sunday, meaning he won on a remarkable eight of his 12 rides there over the weekend.

Added to doubles at Chepstow, Newmarket and a further strike at Kempton, it meant Buick finished the week with 13 winners.

Since the turf season began in April, his monthly strike-rate has not dipped below 22 per cent. After being pipped to the crown by Oisin Murphy last year, Buick will thoroughly deserve the champion jockey title this time around.

Performance of the week

Epicenter

A cracking card at Saratoga on Saturday produced several exceptional performances, including Godolphin’s Cody’s Wish and star three-year-old Jack Christopher, but most impressive was Epicenter, who, after close seconds in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, was spectacular in the Travers Stakes.

Again up against his Kentucky conqueror Rich Strike, Epicenter was simply sensational under Joel Rosario as he streaked to a dominant five-and-a-quarter length success.

This performance should book his place at the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland in November and a potentially epic encounter with Flightline and Pegasus World Cup winner Life Is Good.

Race of the week

Beverley Bullet

There was a lot of disgruntlement over the quality of racing on Saturday but, although it was at the lower end of weekend summer cards with some deplorable field sizes, it also gave the chance for a lower-profile course, Beverley, to be given a big spotlight on ITV’s main channel.

It delivered with an exciting running of its biggest race, the Beverley Bullet, as the Clive Cox-trained Tis Marvellous returned to claim victory for the second successive year.

Unlike last year when he was an emphatic winner, Tis Marvellous had to battle this time and looked as if he might have been beaten when Arecibo swept by, only for the gallant eight-year-old to charge back at the runner-up, with winning joint-owner Stephen Barrow describing his pride and joy as "truly astonishing".

Trainer of the week

John Wainwright

He wasn’t making any headlines but John Wainwright, who runs a small yard in Norton, North Yorkshire, quietly had a superb week as he struck with both his runners.

First, 9-1 shot Biplane continued his good summer form with victory at Southwell on Monday before Wainwright doubled up with Dandy's Angel at Beverley on Saturday.

That earned the trainer a seventh winner of the year, his best tally since 2007, and provided a welcome boost at a time when small operations are expected to struggle more than ever amid the cost of living and energy price crisis.

Ride of the week

Billy Lee on Treasure Trove

Lee was the coolest man at the Curragh on Saturday as he delivered a textbook and perfectly timed ride on Treasure Trove to land the Group 3 Round Tower Stakes.

The likeable two-year-old filly was having her third Saturday start in a row and was stepping back up to six furlongs for the first time since being well beaten by 1,000 Guineas favourite Meditate at Naas.

Lee, who was landing his 75th Irish winner of a career-best season, rode her patiently and with plenty of confidence as they glided through from the back of the field to pip Ocean Quest by a short head.
