The guidance on what constitutes an unseated rider varies across different jurisdictions.

BHA protocol dictates the moment at which a jockey is deemed to have been unseated does not come at the point of complete detachment from horse and tack but when the rider's feet touch the floor.

Media manager Robin Mounsey explained: “A jockey goes down as an unseated rider the instant his feet touch the ground. You won’t find it in the rules, because it’s in the guidance we pass on to judges to ensure consistency when it comes to reporting results, rather than to the stewards."
