Cromwell hoping 'genius' Norton can work his magic on Princess Yaiza

Gavin Cromwell has sent out six winners in the last fortnight on both sides of the Irish Sea, but the red-hot trainer believes Franny Norton will need to perform another mind-blowing magic trick around the tight turns of Chester to give him a first success at the track with Princess Yaiza in the Arkle Finance Cheshire Oaks (2.25) on Wednesday.

Princess Yaiza, who won twice on the all-weather at Dundalk during the winter and was not disgraced behind Mendelssohn in the Listed Patton Stakes before taking third in the Salsabil Stakes at Navan, has been drawn in stall ten of ten.

Consequently, Cromwell's confidence with his first Chester runner has dwindled slightly. He said: "I'm really looking forward to our little trip to Chester, but I'm bitterly disappointed with the draw.

"We're in ten of ten, so it's a bit of a disaster. Franny Norton is a genius around there but he'll certainly have to be a genius to win on her from stall ten. I won't be giving him any instructions anyway."

He added: "She's a lovely filly who is progressing nicely, so hopefully she'll give a good account of herself. The horses are running well at the moment."

That is an understatement. Cromwell's team are flying right now with two winners at Southwell, two more at Kilbeggan, one at Perth and one at Down Royal in the past fortnight.

Ante-post fancy Stream Song was not among the ten declarations for the Cheshire Oaks on Monday morning, freeing up Frankie Dettori to ride recent novice winner Award Winning.

She is one of four Coolmore runners in that race, although trained by John Gosden, along with Dramatically, Forever Together and Magic Wand. The last-named will be ridden by Ryan Moore.

O'Brien is responsible for three of the ten declared runners in the Group 3 MBNA Chester Vase (3.35), the feature race in its new slot on day one of the three-day May meeting on Wednesday.

O'Brien won an eighth Chester Vase 12 months ago with Venice Beach, completing a 1-2-3 that included Wings Of Eagles, who went on to record a stunning victory at 40-1 in the following month's Derby. O'Brien also won the race with subsequent Derby winner Ruler Of The World in 2013.

His three representatives this year are maiden winner Family Tree, Eyrefield Stakes winner Flag Of Honour and Classic Trial third Hunting Horn.

Ispolini, one place ahead of Hunting Horn at Sandown, is Godolphin's representative and will be ridden by William Buick. He, along with Flag Of Honour, who was beaten only half a length in a Group 3 at Longchamp last month, hold the best form coming into the race.
