Critical strategy talks commence as group of 18 declines to name its members

A critical meeting kicked off in central London on Tuesday heralding the start of a process which it is hoped will yield a long-term strategy for British racing.

Eighteen senior figures from across the sport met at a hotel on the River Thames for the first of two days of talks aimed at beginning the task of addressing a host of problems including internationally uncompetitive prize-money, a drain of equine talent abroad, soaring costs for businesses and declining field sizes and attendances.

However, it was unclear who exactly comprised the 18 who will be determining the future direction of British racing after the group yesterday declined to release the identities of all its delegates.

Those who were confirmed to be in attendance were the chairs of the BHA, Racecourse Association and Thoroughbred Group – Joe Saumarez Smith, Wilf Walsh and Charlie Parker respectively – and the members of the sport's executive committee made up of BHA chief executive Julie Harrington, ROA chief executive Charlie Liverton, RCA chief executive David Armstrong and Great British Racing chief executive Rod Street.

However, the group opted not to specifically identify the other 11 members in attendance, only confirming that they included senior representatives and chief executives from the industry and racecourse sectors, and from the BHA.

The Racing Post understands that in addition to the seven named individuals are the BHA's newly appointed director of strategy and change Alison Enticknap, NTF chief executive Paul Johnson, PJA chief executive Ian McMahon, Nars chief executive George McGrath, Thoroughbred Breeders' Association chief executive Claire Sheppard, Arc chief executive Martin Cruddace and RCA board member Charles Barnett, representing large independent racecourses.

It is also likely that in attendance were Jockey Club chief executive Nevin Truesdale, BHA chief operating officer Richard Wayman and the ROA board member representing small independent racecourses, Ilona Barnett.

The talks conclude on Wednesday.
